With the boot now open the keys could be retrieved. Our locksmith very carefully inserted a thin wire in into the tiny gap between the rear window and the boot lid and was able to press the boot unlock button.

I do get the cluster lighting up if I use the in door unlock, and if I use the remote, the same thing happens, plus the hazard lights flash (like normal). I can unlock and open the trunk with my key, but if I try it with the key fob, or the unlock on the driver's side door, the trunk won't open at all. So putting the seats down to access the boot was of no benefit on this occasion. So I'm having an issue with my 2002 Jetta TDI.
